Wanda Conyers, 31, of Conway was arrested Wednesday afternoon by the South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators for three tax charges including Forgery, Assisting in the Preparation of a False Tax Return and Conspiracy.

Conyers submitted a forged W2 form to a tax preparer in order to have a tax return prepared, according to the Revenue Department.

The forged W2 form said Conyers earned $12,599 in wages and had taxes withheld from her wages, but Conyers did not work for this employer, it says.

The fraudulent W2 form resulted in a false income tax return being submitted, and tax refunds totaling $9,073 were requested of which Conyers was not entitled.

The Department of Revenue investigation revealed that Conyers and another individual conspired to commit the offense and Conyers was advised of the tax scam by another individual.

Conyers was taken to the J. Reuben Long Detention Center where she is awaiting a bond hearing.

If convicted, Conyers could face charges of up to 15 years in prison and/or $5,500 in fines for the three felony charges.
