An Horry County mine opened its gates Wednesday to show people what its doing to be considerate of its neighbors.
RCPS Properties runs a 300-acre "fill dirt" mine off Highway 501 and West Perry Road.
A press conference and tour was held Wednesday to show that it goes beyond regulations to keep its neighbors happy, by putting in larger buffers and starting work in one section as late as 9 a.m.
Officials are asking the county if they can continue operations when their permit expires in 2014 even though the mines application was pulled until neighbors are convinced it is not a nuisance.
However, some neighbors are not yet convinced the mine is worth the trouble.
"It's time to maybe stop the mine in the largest growing area in the county," said John Glace, a resident of the community.
The county could take a look at the permit in the next couple of months.
The RCPS mine has been off of West Perry Road for 60 years.
