NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WPDE) - On Saturday, volunteers picked up thousands of pounds of trash along state beaches and riverbanks for South Carolina's Beach and River Sweep.

But during the North Myrtle Beach 5k Beach Sweep, those in attendance saw a race that included something much different.

North Myrtle Beach Dr. Jim Troxel started the race 14 years ago. But this race is leaving much more of an imprint than ever before.

"We've coordinated with him to be here to witness that special moment for them both," said Troxel.

Two Horry County school teachers, Sam Gault and Miriam McMillan, ran the 5k.

While Sam finished the race first, he prepared his proposal for Miriam, who finished the race about ten minutes after him.

"Little bit nervous," said Gault as he waited with friends and family at the finish line. "I hope it goes OK."

Miriam unknowing finished the race and Sam popped the question.

"I want to run this marathon with you," said Sam in front of fifty people gathered around. "Miriam, will you marry me?

Speechless or just out of breath, Miriam covered her mouth and nodded yes.

"She said yes by the way, if you didn't hear her," said Sam.

"I'm sorry," said Miriam. "I'm just in shock right now."
