COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Residents of a Columbia neighborhood that was once home to a fertilizer plant are waiting to see if they have elevated levels of arsenic and lead in their blood.

TheDepartment of Health and Environmental Control this week has been offering free blood screenings to people living in the Edisto Court community.

Last month, DHEC called federal officials after tests showed elevated lead and arsenic levels in soil surrounding an asphalt plant. Officials say a fertilizer plant that used to operate in the same area likely generated the toxic pollutants.

The testing continues Tuesday, and people will get results in a few weeks. Federal officials say ingesting too much arsenic can lead to skin damage, circulatory issues and cancer risks. Lead consumption can cause developmental delays and kidney problems.
