Saturday, thousands are expected to join hands across our nation's beaches in protest of offshore drilling.
Organizers of the third annual Hands Across the Sand event say the protest is in opposition of expanded offshore drilling and support for clean energy solutions for a sustainable planet.
"We will hold hands in support of clean air, water and energy," said local event organizer Mary Max Neely. "The oil companies have reserves. Once again, we are drawing a line in the sand against drilling along America's beaches across the nation and around the world. Our coastline and marine life are too big of a risk to take."
Supporters on the Grand Strand will gather at 11:30 a.m. at Plyer Park in Myrtle Beach near 10th ave. N.
The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce has spoken out in favor of offshore drilling.
In a statement, the chamber president Brad Dean said, "While we remain wary of the potential challenges with drilling, the threat of rising fuel prices and declining fuel supplies controlled by less-than-friendly nations is of great concern, as well."
The event will be a silent show of protest and last for only 15 minutes.
