DARLINGTON -- Former Darlington City Fire Chief Jim Stone was arrested Friday morning following a SLED investigation. He's charged with one count of misconduct in office.

According to the arrest warrant, between January 2009 and June 30, 2012, Stone used inmate labor while on work detail at the Darlington County fire department to wash his personal vehicles, clean oysters, clean around his home and creek house.

The warrant also states Stone admitted to an agent with the State Law Enforcement Division that he did use inmates for personal gain.

Chief Stone was suspended without pay last month, and then announced his retirement earlier this month.

Stone has been the chief of the Darlington Fire Department for 50 years and is credited with helping to modernize the department and improve its relations with the community.
