MYRTLE BEACH -- A retired Horry County sheriff's deputy died after a crash Wednesday in Myrtle Beach.
Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard says Joe Floyd, Jr., 39, of Myrtle Beach died at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
Myrtle Beach police say Floyd was driving south on Seaboard Street from Highway 501 when he crossed the concrete divider, sideswiped a Lincoln Navigator and collided head-on with a Chevy Tahoe.
Floyd worked for the sheriff's office about 13 years.
He retired about a year ago.
"Seems like yesterday," said Chief Deputy Paul Butler.
"Joe was one of those folks who left an impression whenever he left the room," Butler went on to say. "He's not just the kind of guy you want in uniform. He's the kind of guy you want as your neighbor and your friend."
The sheriff's office has received multiple calls from people expressing their grief for the department.
"Even though he had retired, he was still a part of the organization," Sheriff Phillip Thompson said. "We'll certainly miss Joe. Just a terrible tragedy."
