Darlington County sheriff's deputies have charged James Earl Smith, 44 , with Criminal Sexual Conduct First Degree, Kidnapping and Assault and Battery of a High and Aggravated Nature.

Captain Andy Locklair says a woman gave Smith a ride home from a nightclub, Tuesday evening.

Locklair says when they got to Smith's home on River View Road in Darlington, he snatched the keys out of the ignition and forced the woman inside where he sexually assaulted her.

He says the woman was able to get away and called 911.

Deputies came to the home and took Smith into custody.

He's being held at the Darlington County Detention Center.
