Polls opened Tuesday for the special Republican primary to fill the unexpired term of former State Representative Thad Viers, but there was a lot of confusion about who was allowed to vote and voter turnout was low.

Viers resigned when he was indicted onstalking and harrassment charges.

Here are the results with 2 percent voter turnout for this special primary election.

*Heather Ammons Crawford - 431 votes/62%

Larry Richardson - 203 votes/29%

Thomas Muse - 64 votes/9%

Crawford is the unofficial winner with all precincts reporting. She will head to the special General Election for the seat on July 24th. The winner of the special General Election will fill Viers' seat until his current term expires at the end of the year. There are no Democrats running for the seat.

In the meantime, though, Viers term expires at the end of the year so the seat is on the ballot for the June 12th primary next week. Only two of the candidates, Heather Ammons Crawford and Larry Richardson, are also on that ballot. The winner of the June 12th primary will be on the ballot for November.

Poll workers at Waccamaw Elementary School in Conway say only one person had cast a vote by 11:30 a.m. at their precinct. Several people were turned away, even though they should have been allowed to vote. One of the situations was straightened out after a few phone calls. Others thought they were in the district, but weren't. The confusion lies in the fact that district lines for 68 were recently changed. The old lines are in place for the special primary, but the new lines will be in effect for the regular primary next Tuesday.
