A judge sentenced Derrick Jones last week to 17 years in prison for attempted murder. Jones pleaded guilty to the crime in March.

In December of 2010, Jones shot his former girlfriend in the back as she was running away from him at Citi Trends clothing store in Dillon.

Police say the shooting left the woman paralyzed.

Jones also pleaded guilty to a federal gun charge and was sentenced to 10 years in prison for that crime.

He will serve both sentences concurrently.

In 2000, Dillon County deputies arrested Jones for shooting two people at a nightclub.

A state police background check showed Jones pleaded guilty to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and was sentenced to three years probation for that crime.
