The cancellation of this year's Sun Fun Festival is just one of a few announced by the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.
Last Friday, the chamber announced its board of directors decided to cancel Sun Fun because they said the event was no longer self-sustaining.
The event was first held on the Grand Strand in 1951.
Sun Fun Festival chair Richard Singleton said, not including sponsorships, last year's festival cost the chamber just below $100,000. He said the chamber could no longer justify the cost.
The Beach Music Festival also isn't happening this year. Last year's Beach and Music Festival featured musical artist Chubby Checker and an attempt at the world record for most people dancing the "twist" at the same time.
Singleton said the money spent on these events will go toward the chamber's out-of-market advertising and investing in real estate promotion.
Along with the festivals, the chamber also announced it is cancelling two of its member-only events, the 2012 Ice Awards and the President's Gala.
While the events are canceled for 2012, there is still a possibility of bringing these events back in 2013, said Singleton.
"Should there be a time in the future when these events could demonstrate self-sustainability, we would be more than happy to revisit our decision,'' said Singleton.
