SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) - More than a hundred people took part in a benefit to raise money for a 4-year-old girl who was killed last Saturday in a car crash.
A Surfside Beach group meets on a regular basis for Zumba with Linda and Mo. After they heard about last week's tragedy, they wanted to help.
In total, participants raised $2,100 for the family.
"I did not expect this kind of turnout at all. It was just going to be a little thing to help the family come up with some money because I wanted to something to help. And the community got involved and it was a total surprise," organizer Linda Calvanico said.
Jada Bennett was killed and four others were hurt last weekend when a tractor-trailer rear-ended the SUV Jada was in on Highway 501 at the Tanger outlet.
The group is still raising money online.
Another fundraiser will be held for the Bennett family on May 5 at The X Sports Complex.
