CCU basketball player booked on assault charge

CONWAY, S.C. (WPDE) - One of Coastal Carolina University's star basketball players, Christopher Joseph Gradnigo, 22, was arrested early Sunday morning.
According to J. Reuben Long Detention center's booking department, Gradnigo was brought in by Coastal Carolina University police Sunday just after 5:00 a.m. His charges are listed as assault / assault & battery 3rd degree.
At this point, we don't know the details surrounding the arrest. CCU isn't commenting much on the matter.
"Law enforcement will formally charge Gradnigo Monday, and charges will be available tomorrow from University" Martha Hunn, a CCU spokesperson said.
It's also unknown if Gradnigo will remain on the Chanticleers basketball team.
CCU Sports Information Director Mike Cawood says no decision has been made on Gradnigo's playing status. The team is scheduled to practice Monday afternoon.
Hunn added that they will begin the process of review and student conduct including a disciplinary hearing.
According to Coastal's website, "any student who is arrested for any alleged offense other than a minor traffic violation must notify the Office of Student Conduct within 72 hours of the arrest."
Assault is defined in the code of conduct as:
The University prohibits:
a. physical assault or abuse - tries to or does physically strike another,
b. sexual assault or abuse - actual or attempted non-consensual sexual activity including but not limited to intercourse or sexual touching by a person known or unknown, and
c. other conduct which threatens or endangers the health or safety of any person or any act which unreasonably interferes with, impedes or harasses other students in the pursuit of their education or way of life."
