CONWAY, S.C. (WPDE) - One day after thousands of endurance athletes ran the Myrtle Beach Marathon, hundreds took to the streets again Sunday in the name of charity.
Sunday marked the third annual Conway Area Bike Ride. Last year some 280 riders signed up to ride. Sunday, 180 had registered, and 170 of them had checked in for the race that morning. While it was raining, that didn't deter many riders from coming out.
Debbie Moreland of Conway was one of them. She wore a poncho on her bike.
"I thought it was going to good weather I thought it was going to rain Saturday and be nice today, but apparently it's not that way. It's a pretty nice area so it should be fine. I just don't like getting wet, but what can you do."
Moreland says the rain wasn't going to stop her on her first Conway bike ride though.
"This is such a good workout, and it's great for your legs too," she said.
The fundraiser used to be held on the beach in conjunction with the marathon. Three years ago, they split from the Myrtle Beach marathon, losing hundreds of participants. Riders could choose three course at the bike ride ranging from 14.2 to 63 miles long.
The event raises money for Horry County Disabilities and Special Needs. The organization serves those in Horry County with intellectual and related disabilities, head and spinal cord injuries and autism.
