NORTH MYRTLE BEACH -- Deb Delisle found out she'd received a nomination from the President of the United States the same way many of us get information now-a-days, in a text.
"I checked my phone, and it said congratulations," said the North Myrtle Beach resident Delisle. "I didn't know I would find out that way."
What she found out is that President Barack Obama nominated her for the position of Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education at the U.S. Department of Education.
"I'm really excited about having a voice on the national level to advocate for students and for teachers and to help with school improvement across the country. So it's a really exciting time for me," said Delisle.
Delisle started her career as a kindergarten teacher in Connecticut, working her way to Superintendent for Cleveland Heights/University Heights School District in Ohio and ultimately serving as Secretary of Education for the state.
She and her husband, Jim, moved to their long-time getaway home in North Myrtle Beach in July because Deb decided to retire, but that retirement won't last long as the two plan to move to the Washington, D.C. area soon.
"It's always been my motto that no child's education should ever be predetermined by the zip code in which he or she resides," said Delisle. "I'm really passionate about that, and I hope that really supercedes anything that I'm kind of facing."
Delisle's nomination must still be approved by Congress. If Delisle is approved, she will keep her position as long as President Obama remains in office.
