A home on Hampton Ridge Road near Conway caught fire about midnight Thursday.

The family got out safely, awakened by their smoke detectors. They saw the fire in the living room and escaped through a bedroom window.

"Smoke alarms are the first line of defense against smoke and fire in your home," Justin Gibbins, assistant chief of operations at Horry County Fire Rescue, said in a press release. "As this situation shows, simply stated - fire alarms that are in good working order save lives. We urge all residents to check the batteries in their alarms."

Horry County Fire Rescue fire investigators say the fire started with the live Christmas tree.

The living room was damaged in the fire. The rest of the home suffered smoke damage.
