COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The U.S. Justice Department says it needs more information before deciding if South Carolina can proceed with its law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls.

The federal agency sent a letter to the attorney general's office late Monday asking for details on how the state will carry out the photo requirements. It has no problem with two sections of the law not directly tied to the ID.

Election Commission spokesman Chris Whitmire says it means the law's status hasn't changed.

The agency's request starts another 60-day clock on the review period. The state has 60 days to provide the answers. Then, the agency has 60 more days to respond.

South Carolina's history of voting rights violations requires federal clearance of any change in state election law.
