A wedding ring lost for more than 18 years finally makes its way home.
Bob and Elaine Cotell met back in 1960, and since then have been inseparable.
"We're together all the time we're each other's best friend, always have been," says Elaine.
Five years after they met on the sixth day of the sixth month of the year 1965, the Massachusetts best friends decided to start their lives together.
"It's been a great ride," says Bob. "It really has."
"We had a wonderful wedding, and it seems like yesterday," says Elaine.
It was such a day to remember, they inscribed "Elaine and Bob 6-6-65" into their wedding bands. But in 1993 their youngest child, Crystal, took Bob's ring from her mother's dresser.
She brought it to her school in Brockton, MA, and on that day while in second grade, Crystal lost her father's ring.
"She was very upset because she knew how much it meant," says Elaine. "I thought it was in the dump. I really did."
Over the years, the family moved to Carolina Forest and Bob got a new ring.
But while the family moved on, in 2001 Brenda Bersani found the ring at a volleyball game and made it her mission to find its owner.
What made the story more intriguing was that Elaine, Crystal and Brenda were all in the same gymnasium that day when Bersani found the ring.
"We were there," says Elaine. "I never missed one of my girls games."
She says the real mystery is to where the ring was for those 8 years in between.
"When I found it and I saw the inscription, the first thought i had was it at least will help me find them instead of just an ordinary band," says Bersani.
She asked for the help of a friend whose husband is a clerk for the town of Braintree, MA. He sent a message to all the clerks in Massachusetts to see if they could help.
It was in the town of Randolph, MA where a clerk cracked the case.
Bob Cotell and Elaine Connolly were married on June 6th, 1965.
"In the end, I was right. It led me right to them, but it was a long journey."
Tuesday, that long journey ended when the ring inscribed "Elaine and Bob 6-6-65" arrived in the mail.
"I said I can't believe you found it. We were so excited because that was his first ring," says Elaine.
"It's just amazing really it's something we never really expected to see again," says Bob.
The Cotells saying getting the ring back reminds them of that day inscribed on their rings.
"We were thinking a lot about our wedding day since we heard about the ring. it's funny because it was so long ago but it seems like yesterday."
Since that day, the two best friends say nothing's changed, except for Bob's ring size. He still hasn't been able to fit into his new-old wedding band.
Bob and Elaine plan to get the ring resized.
Bob will wear his true wedding band on his left hand and his replacement on his right.
