Trial started Monday for a 15-year-old Socastee High student accused of shooting at the school resource officer and bringing bombs to school.

Christian Helms is charged with attempted murder and three counts of possession of a manufactured bomb device.

He's accused of shooting at Officer Erik Karney. Shrapnel wounded Karney's face.

Police say Helms also brought bombs to school in his backpack.

In March, Family Court Judge Georgia Anderson decided Helms would be tried as an adult for the charges he faces.

Since the March decision, Helms has remained at the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia, where he's been treated for mental health issues.

In questioning potential jurors today, Judge Thomas W. Cooper asked the pool about 45 potential jurors if they knew any of the people arguing either side of the case, the state or the defense. He asked if they or anyone in their household had any connections with Socastee High School, as a student or employee. He asked if any of them had any involvement in violent crime, as a victim, perpetrator or witness.

There were other questions as well and each side was allowed to strike five potential jurors. In the end, eight women and four men were selected, along with two male alternates.

Before dismissing the jury for the day, the judge advised them to not discuss the case among themselves, to avoid news coverage of the case, and to set aside any bias or opinions they might have at this stage.

Testimony is expected to start Tuesday morning.

If convicted of attempted murder, Helms could get 30 years in prison.
