A group that hopes to steer teenagers toward Christianity leased a classic Myrtle Beach theatre Wednesday.
Ground Zero, a local nonprofit ministry to teenagers, will lease the former Rivoli Theatre for $1 a year.
The organization was founded in Tennessee by Scott Payseur in 1996. Ground Zero came to Myrtle Beach five years ago and Payseur started establishing middle school and high school campus ministries through outreach events and working with various churches.
"Our decision was, let's not start a teen club and hope a ministry comes out of it, let's start a ministry and let a teen club come out of it," Payseur, Ground Zero Executive Director, said.
Renovations of the 14,000 square foot building, located at 904 Chester Street, will include a game room, a theater, a coffee shop and a conference center.
"We were looking for the right place. A place that would require minimal renovations as possible and as minimal overhead as possible, so to be able to get both of those with this facility, particularly with the $1 a year lease, that's a huge step in making this a successful project," Payseur said.
The Hampton Inn and Suites Oceanfront has given a $50,000 donation to be used for the first renovation phase estimated to cost $100,000. The phase includes the removal of the asbestos, the general cleanup repairs as well as offices for Ground Zero Staff.
More than 5,300 students attended Ground Zero's outreach last year and Payseur believes the project will be successful with so much support.
"It was really making sure we had the presence in the community, that they knew us and that they would be willing to support something like this," Payseur added.
