The Star Spangled Banner was waved in Myrtle Beach to celebrate Flag Day Tuesday.
"Everyone looks to the United States for guidance and support and we're always willing to give help to those that we feel deserve it whether it's financial help, military, rescue, relief efforts and many other things and the flag is the symbol of what we give to the rest of the world," Sinclair O. Swan Sr., Military Order of the Purple Heart DAV Chapter 30, said.
A ceremony was held at the Disabled American Veterans Building off Church Street to recognize the day the American flag was officially adopted by Continental Congress in 1777.
"Flag Day is a day that we can honor the flag and honor what it represents, which is America and the sacrifices that many men and women have made to make this a free country and to make it the wonderful power it is today," Swan Sr. added.
A group of veterans, community members and media sang the National Anthem, listened to recited history of the flag and watched a ceremonial burning.
"The burning of the flag needs to be respected because it represents the United States and the sacrifices many people have made. I'm hoping that it will grow and people will understand what it means to be in a free country that enables you to do whatever you want," Swan Sr. Said.
Tuesday's ceremony was a way to recognize and appreciate the freedoms of living in this country.
"It gives you the right to disagree with policies and disagree with what you wish, but you've got to respect the rights of others even in a disagreement," Swan Sr. added.
Anyone with old or worn U.S. flags were encouraged to bring them to the ceremony to be properly disposed of following the rifle salute by the Honor Guard and the playing of Taps.
