NC soldier killed during fighting in Afghanistan

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A 29-year-old soldier from North Carolina has died of injuries he sustained during fighting in Zabul province in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department said Saturday that Sgt. Jeffrey C.S. Sherer of Four Oaks died June 2. Sherer was injured when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

Sherer was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based at Fort Wainwright in Alaska.
