Mia Amber Davis, 36, of New York, was a plus-size model and actress who died one day after undergoing knee surgery. Davis had roots in the Pee Dee.
Monday she had outpatient knee surgery in California and the next day she collapsed and died after complaining of shortness of breath.
At this point, Davis' cause of death is undetermined. Samuel Bishop is Davis' uncle. He lives in Darlington County.
Bishop says Davis grew up in New York where she lived with her mother, but she spent countless summers in the Dovesville community of Darlington County with relatives.
"It's still kind of a mystery, as it has been reported. Mia was in perfect health. That's really why it had been so devastating to find out that Mia had passed because she was always a perfect picture of health," said Bishop.
Davis appeared in the movie "Road Trip" and was a popular plus-sized model.
Beginning her career as an intern then production assistant for several television shows, such as "Ricki Lake", "Showtime at the Apollo", "Def Comedy Jam", "VH1 Hard Rock Live" and many others. She was currently Supervising Producer of one of TV's longest running courtroom dramas, "Divorce Court."
Davis has graced the covers and pages of numerous magazines and has appeared on countless television shows.
Bishop says his niece was a kind and giving person who didn't let success go to her head. He says when her grandfather was sick, she took time out of her busy schedule to care for him in the Dovesville community.
"These are her roots. These are her roots and it's just a terrible thing. It's hurting and it's painful for the family but we'll just go on," said Bishop.
He says his niece married in 2008 and was happy. "I know she's going to be greatly missed. As much as she's going to be missed in New York and California and all the other places she's ever performed. She's gonna be missed here in Florence and Darlington," said Bishop.
He and his other relatives will travel to New York where funeral services will take place for Davis sometime next week.
