Police officers ran through the streets of Florence Thursday morning to raise money for Special Olympics.

The Torch Run involved 50 officers from the Florence Police Department, the Florence County Sheriff's Office, the 12th Circuit Solicitor's Office , the probation and parole office and the US Army.

The run started just after 9 a.m. at the City-County Complex on Irby Street. The officers ran 4 miles ending at FATZ Café.

So far this year, the officers have raised $4,000.

Cpl. Jerri James, with the Florence Police Department, said, "This is important because of the kids we have out in the community the neighborhood. All of these athletes are born with disabilities some of them actually develop it later on through out life. So, we want to let them know that we care and support them in what they're going through. We want to show all the support we possibly can."

After leaving Florence, the torch will be passed to officers in other counties until it makes its way through the South Carolina.

The Torch Run is the largest grassroots fundraiser for the Special Olympics.
