COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -- South Carolina senators are arguing over whether they'll go along with a House version of legislation requiring photo identification for voters.
House leaders stripped the bill of provisions for early voting that Senate Democrats insisted the measure contain as a compromise to require picture IDs. Democrats worry the legislation will suppress voter turnout; Republicans say it's a safeguard against fraud.
Wednesday's arguments will decide whether the measure goes to the governor's desk or a conference committee for a compromise to be worked out.
Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell said a Senate compromise on the bill promised to send it to a conference committee if the House changed the legislation.
The legislation died in a conference committee last year when deals couldn't be worked out before the session ended.
