Myrtle Beach City Council approved a first reading Monday afternoon outlawing feeding animals like birds and ducks at the city's parks.

The new ban comes after the city received complaints from some park-goers about the rising number of birds.

If made into law, the ordinance would also prohibit camping in public places, sleeping in the parks and using picnic tables for anything other than eating on them.

Council did amend the ordinance to allow the city's park director to decide on a case-by-case basis which parks would have the restriction.

Myrtle Beach City Spokesman Mark Kruea says the parks would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, but smaller parks with lots of birds, like Futrell Park off Mr. Joe White Avenue would more likely be restricted.
