The Florence County Sheriff's Office wrapped up a four day crack down on drug traffic on I-95 and I-20 Friday. This is the seventh year of Operation Strike Force.
Officers from 21 law enforcement agencies across the state patrolled both interstates in Florence and Darlington counties over four days.
Operation Strike Force targets drug related crimes, as well as other illegal activity.
"We had a great week," Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said in a press release.
During the operation, officers made about 2,166 traffic stops. They seized more than 1,989 grams of marijuana, cocaine, other drugs and contraband with an estimated street value of more than $50,000. Prescription and designer drugs such as Oxycontin, Ecstasy, methamphetamine and LSD were seized as well.
Police arrested fifty people, including four fugitives from other states, for illegal weapons charges, DUI, driving under suspension and equipment violations, among other charges.
"While some would question why we would spend so much time and effort on interstate traffic, most of which simply passes through the county, we would answer in part by saying that the two fugitives from North Carolina apprehended on Wednesday had the capacity and the means to commit serious and violent offenses against the citizens of Florence County had we not removed them from the street," Sheriff Boone stated.
"We are proud and grateful that we have not had a single injury to our officers, the public or suspects during this operation, " Sheriff Boone stated. "The ultimate goal of Operation Strike Force is to reduce accidents in the high traffic corridors around Florence County. Incidents of speeding are reduced and the vast majority of stops result in warning tickets."
"We would not be able to conduct successful operations like Strike Force without the combined effort of the like minded aggressive law enforcement agencies participation with us this week. No one agency can focus on the traffic violations or the drug interdiction as we have been able to do this week. We want to send the message that we will do everything we can to stop drugs from coming to and through Florence County," Sheriff Boone stated. "Our sincere appreciation goes out to those agencies which have participated with us, as well as for the great support of local businesses which have donated their time, money and food to these officers. Without them, this operation would not be possible."
