"Tonight I was gonna fly to New Zealand, which is very stupid, but that was my thinking. I've got to find my Mom," said Michelle Lane.

Four days ago, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the city of Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island. Officials say more than 100 people died and at least 200 are still missing.

Michelle feared her mother was one of the victims.

Her mother, Linda Gilcrist-Green and her husband Ronald Green, were vacationing in New Zealand.

Michelle said it was torture not knowing where she was. "Doesn't register at first, then I got really ill. Didn't cry, I just picked up a phone book, and I just went to work."

Michelle says after two hours of phone calls, an internet search, and talking with several agencies, she connected with the right people in New Zealand about her concerns.

At that point, the police put out an all points bulletin for Linda and Ronald.

"Things happen. Nobody predicted this earthquake. At least if you have an itinerary, and you've given it to family members or the embassy or the consulate, very important to give it to the embassy or the consulate, because they can retrace the steps," added Lane.

Michelle, along with others, were able to figure out that after her Mom and Ronald arrived on the South Island, they rented a car.

She worried the two headed right for Christchurch - the location of the deadly earthquake.

An email her Mom sent last night let everyone know everything was fine.

Her mother was on the west side of the island and not affected by the earthquake. "She said in her email, 'Did you hear there was an earthquake in New Zealand?'" Michelle was amazed. "I don't know how big the South Island is, but yeah, we heard."

Linda travels quite often, and before this incident, Michelle never worried about her safety.

Michelle says now there's going to be changes in their relationship. "We used to talk almost every other day. We got out of that. It kind of got old, and we're going back to that I promise when she gets home, whether she likes it or not."

After leaving New Zealand, her Mom is spending several weeks in Australia with a group of friends.

Michelle said since this incident she signed up to volunteer with the Red Cross since they were helpful in the search for her Mom.
