COLUMBIA (AP) -- Federal jurors are entering their second day of debate over the fate of a former Kershaw County sheriff's deputy accused of beating a handcuffed detainee.

Jurors reconvene Thursday morning in the case of 51-year-old Oddie Tribble. The jury of eight women and four men deliberated for nearly six hours Wednesday and did not reach a verdict.

Tribble was fired in August after video surfaced of him beating a handcuffed man dozens of times with a metal baton, breaking his leg.

Tribble testified inmate Charles Shelley was drunk and belligerent and was making threats against Tribble's family. Prosecutors said Tribble was angry and used unjustified force against the man.

Tribble could face up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines if he is convicted.
