(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Closing arguments are expected in the federal trial of a former Kershaw County sheriff's deputy charged with beating a handcuffed detainee.

Defense attorneys and prosecutors say they expect to make closing arguments Tuesday afternoon in the trial of 51-year-old Oddie Tribble. He is on trial in Columbia for a federal civil rights violation for allegedly beating an inmate so severely the man's leg was broken.

Tribble was fired in August after video surfaced of a deputy beating a handcuffed man dozens of times with a baton. Tribble has testified that inmate Charles Shelley was belligerent and was making threats against Tribble's family.

He could face up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines if he's convicted.
