Horry County police say John David Gonska, 39, is suspended without pay after his arrest on a charge of Criminal Domestic Violence.

A police report says Gonska and his girlfriend were watching the Steelers/Jets game Sunday night when they started arguing over their plans for the Super Bowl. The woman told police Gonska wanted to go bar-hopping after the game, but she wanted to stay at their home.

That's when the woman says she pulled a beer out of Gonska's hand. She says he then bent her thumb backward.

Gonska headed toward the bathroom and the woman followed him. That's when she says he pushed her onto the couch, choked her and punched her in the mouth.

She says she might of hit him in the face and he got up and walked out the back door.

Police say they both smelled of alcohol. They say the woman had bruises on her arm and a swollen and bloody mouth.

Police arrested Gonska for Criminal Domestic Violence. He's being held in J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

Horry County Sgt. Robert Kegler says Gonska has been employed with the department since December 2004.
