The City of Myrtle Beach kicked off it's annual choose to lose weight loss and fitness competition today.

The event began with a health and fitness fair at Pepper Geddings recreational center.

Participants can choose to take part in choose to lose, choose to move, or choose to train.

Officials say all three programs offer group fitness classes, wellness seminars, and team challenges.

The winners receive prizes but the overall goal of the program is to get people away from a sedentary lifestyle.

"We all need to exercise as part of our daily life. we all need to make fitness a priority. life is just so much better when you're able to do things and you're in shape. it's not all about vanity and getting into clothes and looking good, it's really about being healthy," said Kevin Morris, supervisor at Pepper Gedding rec center.

This is the 6th annual weight loss competition.

Officials say participants are challenged to push their limits to reach higher fitness levels.
