(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's 20 newest legislators are heading to the Statehouse to learn how to make laws and follow them.

Monday and Tuesday are orientation days for 17 new Republican and 3 new Democratic legislators.

They'll start Monday with doughnuts and a prayer followed by a welcome from House Speaker Bobby Harrell outlining their powers, duties and his expectations.

After that they'll get briefings on ethics laws, House rules, dealing with media and the state's budget, which is heading toward a $1 billion deficit.

Tuesday they'll hear how they'll get paid and how bills are written and handled on the House floor.

They won't have the House to themselves long. House veterans join them Wednesday for a two-day organizational session.
