Surfside Beach pier restaurant lease remains the same

Tuesday, Surfside Beach Town Council discussed the terms of the lease for the restaurant that is currently Nibils.

More than a month ago, for the second time, the city started taking bids for the location, but so far, there have not been any.

Last spring, the restaurant's current owner and an LLC belonging to local TV personality Cecil Chandler, who is employed at WPDE, both bid on the space. Former town administrator Ed Booth and a former town attorney worked with Chandler on the bid.

After accusations of a conflict of interest, town council members decided to throw out those two bids and re-open bidding.

Now, council members say if bids don't come in, the town could lose money.

"My fear is if we don't get a strong performer in that space, as Nibils was, we may be looking at a major loss," said Surfside Beach Town Councilman Doug Samples.

Nibils' lease officially runs out next month.
