Chase Lewis McClary, 22, was arrested about two weeks ago in Charlotte, North Carolina in connection with an assault on a teenager on August 20.
The Florence County sheriff's office says McClary attacked a 16-year-old African American boy at a home in the Brandon Woods Subdivision. Investigators say the West Florence High School Student was visiting a friend when he was attacked.
They say Chase McClary hit the teenager in the head with a coffee mug and when the mug broke, continued to cut the boy with the broken pieces. The boy needed 200 stitches.
Deputies say during the assault, McClary called the teen racially derogatory names.
In addition to the State charge, the U.S. Attorney's Office and the U.S. Department of Justice are reviewing the case and may prosecute it as a hate crime under federal law.
Officials with Charlotte-Mecklenburg police tell NewsChannel 15 McClary will be in court Thursday morning for an extradition hearing because he is fighting being brought back to Florence County.
We will let you know the outcome of the hearing as soon as we know. For now, McClary is being held at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.
