Safe Kids of Florence is asking that you pay close attention to your child around water, as a child can drown in about 20 seconds.

Safe Kids is led by McLeod Health. Officials say three kids have drowned this summer in the Pee Dee.

Since Memorial Day, more than 70 kids under 15-years-old have drowned in swimming pools.

Safe Kids stresses that parents should watch their children while their in the pool, even if they can swim. They also say ditches with water in them can also be a hazard for your child.

"A good bit of rain will quickly fill up a ditch and children find that very attractive as a place to go and relax and play in and that's very dangerous because it's a hard place to get into," said Erin Faile with McLeod Health.

Safe Kids say life jackets should be worn by all children who are weak or inexperienced swimmers. They say the life jacket should be coast guard approved because they offer the safest devices.
