The Marion County Coroner identified the inmate who drowned Tuesday in the Little Pee Dee River.

Jerry Richardson says Ronnie Davis, 40, of Marion drowned when he went into the river to cool off.

Police say Davis was in jail on child support charges.

Several inmates from Marion County were picking up trash along Highway 501 near the Marion - Horry county line. Their supervisor took them to the river to take a break. Two inmates entered the water, but only one returned.

The Horry County Fire Rescue dive team recovered the man's body around 5 p.m. The Department of Natural Resources led the search.
