NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Gov. Mark Sanford is traveling to South Carolina's coast to talk with emergency officials as the hurricane season gets under way.

The governor will be in Horry, Charleston and Beaufort counties on Tuesday to discuss hurricane preparedness in what experts say may be a busy storm season.

The National Hurricane Center is projecting 23 named tropical storms with 14 becoming hurricanes with top winds of 74 mph or higher.

Forecasters say as many as seven of those hurricanes could become major hurricanes with sustained winds of at least 111 mph.

Sanford held a discussion in Columbia last month with emergency officials to discuss plans for the new hurricane season.

The hurricane season started Monday and runs through the end of November.
