A free water safety class is scheduled for next week.

Georgetown Hospital System teamed up with the American Red Cross to provide the class.

They came up with the idea last year when three Sandy Island residents died in a boating accident. Sandy Island is only accessible by boat.

The class is scheduled for April 27th and 29th from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The program will consist of classroom lectures and in-pool safety techniques, covering topics such as risks of drowning, general water safety, how to properly wear a life jacket, rescue breathing/CPR, and emergency action steps.

The class is intended for people ages 9 and older. Registration is free, but class space is limited to 40 people and all participants should bring a bathing suit. To register, call the Red Cross at 477-0020 or 546-5422.
