Horry County Council did not appoint a new county administrator Tuesday night.

Instead, it decided to appoint an ad-hoc committee to negotiate a contract for acting administrator John Weaver.

Weaver and former Oconee County administrator Dale Surrett were the finalists for the job.

Council has been searching for a new administrator for almost a year.

Council member Carl Schwartzkoph says, "I thought that, you know, we're moving forward. It might not be as fast as people would like, but I would hate to rush to judgement, make a decision in haste and then suffer the consequences."

Administrator Danny Knight resigned in May 2009.

Council hired a firm to search for a candidate to no avail.

Council interviewed the last two candidates in March.

Chairman Liz Gilland would like to have the contract done in the next few days.
