Predictions out for the 2010 hurricane season show it should be an active one and first responders from around the state are now better prepared to handle the threat.

The conference held by the South Carolina Emergency Management Association wrapped up Wednesday in Litchfield Beach. New topics discussed included dealing with children during disasters as well as using technology to better inform residents of Horry and Georgetown counties of dangerous weather related situations.

"We've learned different techniques on how to get the word out through social media outlets and to make sure the public is informed of any changes in conditions to give the best information so that they are better prepared," said Sam Hodge, Georgetown County's Emergency Management Director.

Hodge says while a hurricane is the largest disaster to plan for, tornados and large thunderstorms where residents lose power are also a major concern.
