A convicted sex offender from Connecticut who was recently released from prison has been extradited to Myrtle Beach to face a new sexual assault charge.
Mark Paluzzi, 44, of New Haven, CT, was released in the past two weeks from a New England prison.
He spent two years there after pleading guilty to one count of risk of injury to a minor and two counts of 4th degree sexual assault in Connecticut. Originally, however, he had been charged with 30 counts of sexual crimes, police said.
In Connecticut, Paluzzi was sentenced to three years in prison (reduced from ten years) and ten years probation.
Before he was sent to prison in Connecticut, he took a vacation to Myrtle Beach, and according to Myrtle Beach police, he sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl while he was there.
Police say the incident happened in July 2006, and they say Paluzzi inappropriately rubbed the young victim while she was sleeping. He is charged with committing a lewd act upon a child under 16 years of age.
On Saturday, Myrtle Beach Municipal Judge Scott Long set a $10,000 surety bond for Paluzzi. Judge Long also ordered a restraining order that said Paluzzi shouldn't contact his victim or her family.
Paluzzi's attorney said he expects his client will post bond and head back to Connecticut later this weekend. Once he's there, Paluzzi will have to begin his ten-year probation.
He's expected to make an initial appearance in general sessions court in Conway sometime in mid-May.
