Acting United States Attorney Kevin F. McDonald says a federal jury in Florence today convicted Shelton Demond Ketter, 28, of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition after a three-day trial.
Officers encountered Ketter with a gun while conducting an investigation in Hartsville in 2008. Ketter has five prior convictions for burglary, and is prohibited by federal law from possessing firearms.
Because of his prior record, Ketter faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years imprisonment and a maximum possible sentence of life. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled.
The case was investigated by the Hartsville Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney Carrie A. Fisher of the Florence office handled prosecution of the case.
