CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say they found an unloaded gun and ammunition in the pockets of a 14-year-old student at a South Carolina middle school.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports Thursday that an officer took a .380-caliber handgun from the student's inside jacket pocket, and eight rounds of ammunition from another pocket.

The 14-year-old James Island Middle School student was charged as a juvenile.

A police report says the gun was found after a student alerted school officials and an officer assigned to the school on Tuesday afternoon.

A day earlier, James Island Charter High School officials found an unfired round of ammunition inside a toilet in a girls' restroom.
