Saturday was closing day for the Piggly Wiggly in the Carolina Forest area.

A company spokesman says growth at the store has been stagnant, and competition from a nearby Food Lion store and the new Wal-Mart on Highway 501 has hurt business.

For the day, it meant some good deals for shoppers.

"With the economy the way it is, everyone's watching the bottom dollar and the store's closing and we're trying to take advantage of some of the sales," said Guyland Altman, who did some last minute shopping at the store with his wife and two daughters.

Officials with the store say they hope to transfer workers to other Piggly Wiggly stores on the Grand Strand.
