CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's education superintendent is using a coastal city to announce new efforts to help school teachers identify child sex abuse.

Jim Rex joins Charleston Mayor Joe Riley, North Charleston Mayor Keith Summer and local school superintendents on Wednesday for the announcement.

The training efforts are sponsored by Darkness to Light, a nonprofit based in Charleston working to prevent sex abuse through education and public awareness.

The group formed a training partnership with the state Department of Education this past year. The department already has trained 9,100 educators statewide, including 50 guidance counselors who took the training in the past week.
