Grand Strand tops state in car thefts

Again this year, the Grand Strand ranks number one in the state and among the top cities in the country for vehicle theft.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau ranks the Myrtle Beach area 15th nationally for car thefts per capita. That's up from 23rd last year.

Officials say the high ranking is because Myrtle Beach is a tourist destination and hosts large events.

They say car thefts lead to higher insurance rates for all car owners in the area and it's why drivers should protect their cars from theft.

"You want to lock your doors, always make sure your doors are locked. Make sure your windows are rolled up, do not leave your sun roof open. Any visible anti-theft device will help a little bit," said All State Insurance agent Maurice Stephens.

Stephens says living in a region with a high rate of car thefts can cost you $200 to 300 more per year in car insurance.
