Police don't plan on charging a Florence County grandmother in connection with the accidental shooting of her 4-year-old grandson.

The boy got ahold of a 25-caliber handgun and shot himself in the throat, while he was in the care of his grandmother.

The mother told NewsChannel 15 Daveon Holt is stable and in good spirits.

Overnight, he was flown to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston where he remains in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Just before 9:00 o'clock Tuesday night, officers got called to the home on West Kirby Drive in Florence County.

Deputies say the gun was inside an 7-foot tall entertainment center in a back bedroom.

Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said Daveon is very tall for his age and could easily reach the gun because it wasn't on the top shelf.

"You're talking about a weapon that was in an armoire or entertainment center and was in the middle of the top shelf, which would probably be about his height. We feel like that child had plundered somewhat through and made his way to the handgun," explained Sheriff Boone.

Boone said because the weapon was secured in the cabinet, he has no plans to charge the grandmother.

He said at this point, they haven't found any negligence on her behalf and the law states they must prove negligence to charge her.

Deveon is expected to be ok, but no one's sure when he'll get out of the hospital.

Sheriff Boone reminds everyone to make sure all guns in the home are well out of the reach of children.
