A community came together to celebrate and remember the late civil rights activist, minister and teacher, H.H. Singleton.

Hundreds attended the Reverend's homegoing at Conway High School Saturday afternoon.

The ceremony included several speakers, hymns, and eulogy read by his son.

Singleton is remembered as an earth science teacher, a minister at Cherry Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Conway, and most notably, a civil rights activist with the NAACP.

Singleton served as the Conway branch president for 25 years. He also served on the organization's National Board from 1996-2005.

While many grieved at the loss of a great man, many rejoiced in the ways that he impacted the community.

"This is really not a time to be sad because the impact that he had on our lives is again because he helped us to propel ourselves to higher heights," said friend Carl Jones.

Singleton stepped down from the NAACP in 2005 and then battled Alzheimers until his death on Monday.

"You could still see the strength of Reverend Singleton even through all of that," said Jones.

Many who attended the homegoing hoped Singleton's legacy will live on for years to come.

"He stood for what was right," said NAACP college Liz Zimmerman Keitt.

Singleton will be buried in Edgefield, South Carolina where he was born.
