Georgetown County Council held a first reading of an ordinance Tuesday night that could allow a big box store in Pawleys Island.

Developer Sunbelt Industries wants to put the store in Pawleys Island Plaza on Petigru Drive and Highway 17. The ordinance would allow for the planned development.

But a lot of people in the area are fighting the store, saying it would hurt local shops.

There was no vote Tuesday night. The second reading of the ordinance is scheduled for December 11th.

In 2005, residents successfully fought off a Lowe's Home Improvement store.
